You Have a Choice

In class this week, we watched an ESPN movie called The Guru of Go. This movie was very moving and motivational, and it reminded me that in life, I will be faced with many situations, but I can choose how I respond to them.

Hank Gathers had everything going for him. He was the star basketball player at Loyola Marymount University and he led his team to many victories. He was awarded WCC Player of the year and was one of the top scorers and rebounders in the nation. However in 1989, after he collapsed at the free-throw line during a game, he was told the devastating news that he was diagnosed with an abnormal heartbeat. The medication he was prescribed affected his play, so he reduced his intake greatly. During a basketball game in 1990, Gathers collapsed again. He was rushed to the hospital, but was declared dead shortly after his arrival. After his death, his team had to decide whether or not they would continue the season. The team’s other leader and Gathers’ close friend, Bo Kimble, made the executive decision that the team would continue to play in honor of Hank. At their next game, Kimble, a right handed shooter, made a tribute to Gathers by shooting his first free-throw with his left hand, something that Hank was known for doing. Kimble continued to do this in memory of Gathers, and the team continued to work hard.

Bo Kimble and the team could have easily decided to quit playing and not finish the season. They could have been discouraged and unmotivated, but instead, they decided to finish the season strong and play their best during every game.

Life is never going to be perfect. We are going to be faced with many difficult situations and obstacles that may affect our life greatly and make us want to give up. However, we don’t have to let them prevent us from living life to the fullest. You can decide how you want to continue to live your life, and even in the tough times, you can turn all of the negative into something positive. You have a choice. Make the right one.

– Kimberly
